Inflation's Toll on Senior Nutrition Programs

According to the latest consumer price index, grocery prices have risen by 1.3% compared to last year, putting a strain on the Oaks Nutrition Center's ability to fulfill its mission. The center's administrator, Lisa Hicks, has expressed concern over the growing financial burden, stating, "It's becoming a big problem for us and every Senior Center out there."To offset the higher food costs, the Oaks Nutrition Center has been forced to explore creative fundraising efforts. Hicks revealed that they are planning to host a trivia night on October 26th, with the proceeds going towards supporting the center's operations. "As well as doing garage sales raffles, I'm pretty much up for trying anything," Hicks said, highlighting the center's determination to maintain its vital services.

Relying on Community Support

The Oaks Nutrition Center's funding sources extend beyond its own fundraising initiatives. Hicks noted that the center receives donations from local organizations, including civic groups, faith-based communities, and veterans' groups. "We get money from local organizations donated to U.S. civic groups, faith groups, and veterans groups, which are extremely helpful," she said. However, Hicks acknowledged the challenges of operating in a small town, where numerous organizations are competing for limited resources. "We're a small town with a whole lot of people doing a whole lot of good things," she explained, emphasizing the need for continued community support to sustain the Oaks Nutrition Center's efforts.

Ensuring Seniors Receive Nourishment and Care

Despite the financial hurdles, the Oaks Nutrition Center remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the senior citizens of Sikeston. Hicks expressed a sense of determination, stating, "Just trying to make sure that we're there for them and helping them in any way we can."The center's trivia night fundraiser is just one example of the innovative approaches the Oaks Nutrition Center is taking to maintain its operations. Hicks encouraged the community to get involved, saying, "To sign up for Saturday's trivia night fundraiser, you can call Hicks at 573-471-6047 or email her at [email protected]."As the nation grapples with the ongoing effects of inflation, the Oaks Nutrition Center's story serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role that community-based organizations play in supporting the most vulnerable members of society. Through their unwavering dedication and resourcefulness, the center's staff and volunteers are ensuring that Sikeston's seniors continue to receive the nourishment and care they deserve.
